LoRaWAN sensor battery life is a quote, not a slogan. Use the interval table on the datasheet. These five trade-offs move it.
1. Uplink interval
A reading every minute can look responsive and still be the wrong design. Irrigation and cold rooms rarely need it. The needle probe is quoted up to about two years at its scheduled interval. Faster bursts spend that budget.
2. Spreading factor and ADR
Higher spreading factor reaches farther and spends more airtime. Leave ADR on unless a survey forces a fixed rate. See the knowledge hub for deployment notes.
3. Temperature
Cold rooms and winter poles are harder on cells than a lab bench. Quote the site, not the bench.
4. Event versus periodic
Leak kits can uplink on a wet transition and still send heartbeats. That pattern saves airtime compared with blind polling. Confirm the decoder still exposes a frame counter so a silent node is obvious. The decoder library lists those fields for priority models.
5. Access for replacement
A five-year cell on a ceiling you cannot reach is a four-year problem. Plan the swap when you mount the node. Stock trials start at 100 units if you want to measure a real interval before branding at 500.
The 0.3% field failure rate is not a battery specification.
